Tomato Sauce Recipe

A simple tomato sauce recipe to pair with any pasta dish or pizza to surprise your beloved with a delicious Italian meal.

Tomato sauce from the jar always seems off in either color or taste when compared to homemade. I recommend the extra expense of using organic ingredients if possible but you can always use what you have access to as a substitute.

Fresh basil is an option but it adds to the overall flavor.

The amount of salt is also something to build up to depending on your taste. I personally don’t use any salt as most meals are salty on their own.

There is also no tomato paste as this sauce is thick enough after simmering. You can simmer longer for even thicker sauce.

emergency rescue note

Canned crushed tomatoes are the main ingredient but be aware that different brands use a different kind of tomato so you may need to try a few before you find one that is the exact flavor you want.

A food chopper is used to make the chopping of the garlic and onion faster and easier. You can also use a sharp knife to chop instead.

If you like a sweeter sauce, then peel 3 carrots and place the full carrot in the sauce while it’s simmering.  Remove the full carrots with prongs before serving. You can also use a sweet onion instead of a yellow onion.

There are many dinner recipes that require a tomato sauce as part of the meal. You can get as creative as you want with adding extra ingredients like oregano and parsley but start with this as a base.

Add olive oil to a medium pot and heat on stovetop at low (2) setting so the oil does not smoke. Place the chopped garlic in the pot and keep an eye on it. Stir occasionally with a spatula. Cook the garlic until slightly golden as shown.

4

Add the chopped onion into the pot and stir the garlic into the onion so the garlic is not on the bottom cooking. Drizzle a little more olive oil on top of the onion and garlic. Cook on low heat for about 5 minutes until the onion looks soft while stirring occasionally.

Pour in each can of crushed tomatoes. Use a can opener but leave a small piece uncut as a hinge to open the lid. Slightly open the lid and pour so the tomato doesn’t splash all over.
